2023 Mock Grid Predictions
Updated: Aug 25, 2022
While little has happened in the past week news-wise, we have seen statements from team bosses discussing the futures of drivers currently on the grid.
Helmut Marko (Red Bull) said Pierre Gasly would be returning to AlphaTauri.
Gunther Steiner (Haas) & Franz Tost (AlphaTauri) suggested Mick Schumacher & Yuki Tsunoda respectively still have work to do in the second half of the season to secure their places for 2023.
Otmar Szafnauer (Alpine) said that if the FIA Contract Recognition Board rules in Alpine's favor, they could be taking Oscar Piastri to court if he refused to drive for them. He also spoke on Daniel Ricciardo and a possible willingness to have him back at Alpine.
The teams with unconfirmed driver lineups for 2023 are Alpine, McLaren, AlphaTauri, Haas, Alfa Romeo, and Williams. The driver lineups at Alpine and McLaren will be influenced by the decision of the Contract Recognition Board on Oscar Piastri's contract. It is possible the other three teams will wait on this decision before confirming their own lineups as drivers like Daniel Ricciardo could be made available.
If Oscar goes to McLaren, the seat at Alpine will have many suitors. Daniel Riccardo is currently the favorite. Other possible candidates include Pierre Gasly, if he can break from Red Bull contract, and Theo Pourchaire, similarly if he can get out of his Sauber Academy contract.
AlphaTauri, Haas, and Alfa Romeo each have a young driver looking to prove they deserve to stay in F1. Zhou Guanyu and Yuki Tsunoda are likely safe. Mick Schumacher is the driver most at risk of these three.
That being said, here are our projections for the 2023 F1 grid.
